Weezer’s first two albums, The Blue Album (1994) and Pinkerton (1996) are two of 1990’s best. Their 3rd album, The Green Album (2001), wasn’t nearly as quirky, but being pop-rock perfection, was still pretty good. Then came their 4th, Maladroit (2002), which was an utter piece of underproduced shit. Then came their 5th, Make Believe (2005), which was an overproduced piece of shit. Then came their 6th, The Red Album (2008), which was supposed to sound like their first 3 combined, but was more of an awkwardly-produced piece of shit. At that point, I had given up on the band and swore I would never purchase another record of theirs ever again.

Today, Weezer dropped their 7th album, Raditude. As of yesterday I had zero intent on buying it. They had a mediocre single, a weird infomercial about Snuggies, and some awful song about a girl getting hot. Then, like most Weezer tunes, their single got stuck in my head. I was thinking about dropping $0.99 on it, but saw that Amazon was selling the entire album for only $4. Ah, screw it.

Review: It’s a lovable piece of crap. When you set the bar to zero, it’s hard to disappoint. The songs are catchy, generic, and harmless. They’ll put you in a mindless good mood. I temporarily felt like a kid again. It’s not the Weezer of the 1990’s, but it’s better than the Weezer of the mid 00’s. I’ll take it for what it’s worth… $4.

Too… cute… can’t… focus.

You must watch this video. It is a little long. Get to the two minute mark, when it becomes the funniest thing I have seen in months. Don’t skip ahead, the slow build is what makes it work. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

I’m an enormous fan of Tom Green, or at least an enormous fan of who Tom Green used to be. This is an interesting glance into the things that had a negative impact on his life. He’s kidding around, but you can tell he means it. His sincere bitterness dwelling in the past probably explains the crappiness of his content in the present.

A badass group of NIN fans put together all the fan shot footage from the Webster Hall show in August, and released their edit of the whole concert. Being that this was the most epic concert I have ever been to (it was one of their last shows ever and they played The Downward Spiral in its entirety from start to finish), to say that I am totally psyched about this would be an understatement.

Full Disclosure: One of my shots made it into the project and I’m credited as a camera operator. But if anything, doesn’t that make this even more badass?!?

Lots of captivating...

Consumer Tuesday: The Dog Saw a Magic Mouse

Lots of captivating consumable crap usually comes out on Tuesdays. Today was no different, as Apple dropped some futuristic (present?) gadgets and Malcolm Gladwell released a book.

Apple released Magic Mouse. Their latest mouse which features a smooth surface without any buttons, that reads gestures and touch input (think trackpad). $69 is pretty steep for a mouse, but these features are pretty rad and will probably enhance your computer experience for the better. Worth it just for not having tracking ball that stops working because you got schmutz on it.

Apple also released new 16:9 iMacs that can finally function as an external monitor (not that you’d want them too, they are up to quad core processors).

As per the intellectual side of consumerism, my favorite author, Malcolm Gladwell, released “What The Dog Saw.” Malcolm Gladwell has written the fascinating books on social theory: “The Tipping Point,” “Blink,” and “Outliers”. This book is a collection of his writings from the New Yorker, which he wrote while writing the books I wrote about at the beginning of this paragraph that I just finishing writing.

What are your views on advertising?

Advertising is bizarro art. Both are cut from the same cloth, but what sets them apart is intent. Art is driven, at least in theory, by the desire to express oneself. Advertising is driven by the desire to promote a product or service. Often times the two overlap making it hard to tell the difference. As long as there’s money to be made there’ll be advertising. I can’t deny that. With development of technology and the market comes increasingly elaborate ad campaigns. Sometimes the campaigns are funny. Sometimes they’re artful. But one thing I’ll never accept is public advertising no matter how clever the campaign is.
