2010 in Review.

Here are some things about 2010 worth archiving.  I tried my best to avoid the recency effect:

MUSIC:

Album of the Year LCD Soundsystem’s “This Is Happening”.

  • Hits the spot for a dancing by yourself fest or massive party.  Irresistible riffs. Quirky.  Catchy.  Translates perfect live. Cool music video for “Drunk Girls”.  Even the live London Sessions studio recording rocks.  James Murphy for the win.

Other awesome albums:

  • Holy Fuck “Latin” (prog rock at its finest)
  • Social Network Soundtrack (another awesome Nine Inch Nails album)
  • Kanye West “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” (“All Of The Lights” makes my ears want to vomit, but everything else is dope)
  • Das Racist “Sit Down, Man” and ”Shut Up, Dude” (these guys are the Indian Beastie Boys)
  • Spoon “Transference” (straight up awesome rock, no frills needed)
  • Free Energy “Free Energy” (picking up the pop-rock baton that Weezer dropped)
  • Gorillaz “Plastic Beach” (tracks 4-6 make me go nuts)
  • Wavves “King of the Beach” (if Green Day’s Dookie came out in 2010, it’d sound like this)
  • Arcade Fire “Suburbs” (this band was perfect in 2010, too perfect)
  • Big Boi “Sir Lucious Left Foot” (half of Outkast is still Outkast)

Artist Most Listened To: Deerhoof

INTERNET VIDEOS:

MOVIES:

  • Moon (released in 2009, but I didn’t see it ‘till this year.  Sam Rockwell is on the moon and finds his own dead body.  Whaaaaat!?!?!)
  • Black Swan (maybe the only victim of the recency effect, or maybe just plain awesome [it’s the latter])
  • Exit Through The Gift Shop (3 seconds of my Poster Boy video is in it!)
  • Babies (the most beautifully shot documentary I’ve ever seen)
  • Avatar (so epic it’s still worth mentioning)

TECHNOLOGY:
I don’t own either of these, but they’re THE FUTURE:

  • Microsoft Kinect - 3D camera for Xbox that tracks your movements so you don’t need a remote.  Cool as is, but the hacks are what have me hyped.
  • iPad - Fuck laptops!

MOST DESPICABLE:

NARCISSISM:
Although not a prolific year for the KSKILL brand (only released 6 videos on my YouTube account), I did help make a bunch of videos for other people.  Here are my favorite productions to have worked on this year:

  • Improv Everywhere’s MP3 Experiment 7 (editor, co-producer, shooter): 3,000 people listen to the same MP3, ending in a massive mummy party in Bryant Park.  This was the most draining thing I worked on this year, and by far my favorite.  Hit 1,000,000 views within 3 weeks!
  • Aakash Nihalani’s STOP POP & ROLL(shooter, editor) - Aakash cube-a-fies a stop sign in Brooklyn, and we pay homage to street artists along the way.
  • Training Wheels(producer, editor, writer)- Learning how to ride a bike was my resolution of 2009, and getting a video featured on The Daily What was one of my goals for 2010.  2 Birds, one awkward video.
  • Poster Boy “Gone Fishin” (shooter, editor) - Shot in 2009 but delayed the release due to legal issues.  I’m happy we finally released this to help promote PB’s new book
  • Beard Pals (producer, writer, actor) - I might re-edit it some day as it runs a little long, but I love how stupid this video is!  Written the night before we shot it, and I love the spontaneous wacky energy that came with the lack of preparation.  One of my goals for 2k11 is to make more spur of the moment videos.
  • The Boy Who Cried Gay (producer, writer, editor) - This video had so much potential, but didn’t deliver. Shot over the course of 2 years, I lost focus along the way and over-edited it.  Fun nonetheless.
  • Spoiler Alert - The first thing I ever shot on a DSLR.  Also, Jason Eppink is the man.
  • Improv Everywhere (shooter, blurs) - MP3 Experiment 7Black Tie BeachThe Tourist Lane,  No Underwear 2k10 (April Fools)No Pants 2k10, and a couple unreleased ones.  Not only did shooting for IE teach me how to shoot, but this has been one of my favorite gigs to date.  More fun stuff to come from these guys in 2k11.
  • Delocated Season 2 (assistant editor) - I got paid to work on an awesome show for [adult swim]. Fuck yeah!
  • Lastly, I was on the Apprentice.  Yeah!

LOOKING FORWARD:

My full-time job wraps up in January, and I’ll spend the next few months making a short film/pilot.  Bryan Gaynor and I will be wrapping up our animated short, MATES.  And I’m sure I’ll bust out a few sketch comedy and street art videos along the way.  My resolution for 2011 is to stay focused and only work on projects that I love.

Cheers,
Keith Haskel 2010
